Coming back to school after two weeks of sleeping in, binge-watching favorite shows, and indulging in holiday treats can feel like a shock to the system. While winter break offers a well-deserved pause, transitioning back into a school routine isn’t always easy. Here are a few tips to help students start the new semester on the right foot.
To begin with, it’s important to readjust sleep schedules before classes resume. Many students fall into the habit of staying up late and sleeping in during break, but that rhythm doesn’t work once school is back in session. Easing into the routine—by going to bed earlier and waking up around the time school starts—can help the body adjust. Doing this a few days in advance makes those early mornings feel far less painful.

Next, organizing school supplies and reviewing class notes can make a big difference. Over the break, backpacks and desks often turn into piles of papers, snacks, and clutter. Taking time to clean up, gather materials, and look over past notes or textbooks can help refresh the mind and prevent the return to school from feeling overwhelming. It’s also wise to get started on any lingering assignments instead of saving them for the night before.
Finally, setting small, realistic goals can help keep motivation high. Whether aiming for a better grade, joining a new club, or staying on top of homework, having clear objectives makes the school experience more manageable. Writing goals down and keeping them visible—on a phone, planner, or calendar—can serve as helpful reminders. Celebrating small wins, like making it through the first week, can also boost morale.
