The next installment in the Tron franchise is the all-new, exhilarating, intense, and ambitious “Tron: Ares.” The new Tron film takes place fifteen years after the second installment in the franchise, “Tron: Legacy.” It follows Ares, a powerful digital program who is brought into the real world. He begins to question his purpose after being created to be used as a weapon. As different corporations argue over a code that allows digital life to exist outside computers, Ares ends up choosing to rebel and pick his own future. Just eleven days after its release, it sits at 104.1 million dollars at the worldwide box office.
Critics say the film was aided by the time jump between Ares and the previous installment from 2010, since it branched off and created an entirely new plotline. Many viewers enjoyed the movie because it was not heavily connected to the last film, allowing them to understand the plot easily. However, it does not disregard the stories of the earlier movies, as it balances the new storyline with slight connections to the previous films. Many also enjoyed the soundtrack, which complemented the action-packed scenes well.
Despite this, critics have said the film is not a cinematic masterpiece, as it has flaws such as an unstable plot and a lack of substance. Critics pointed out that various characters were underdeveloped, leaving the audience without much emotional connection to them. Viewers also felt the film was anticlimactic, leaving them unsatisfied with the ending. This was mostly due to the several storylines the movie tried to balance.
In my opinion, it was a nice addition to the franchise, although I hope the next installments carry more depth and stronger storytelling.
